Sovereign Over All

Scripture: Psalm 57:1-11

Verse 11: “Be exalted, O God, above the Heavens! Let your Glory be over all the Earth!

This Psalm was David’s response to a desperate situation. David was fleeing for his life from King Saul, and He had hidden in a cave. In this moment of distress and uncertainty, David put his dependence and trust in God. He cried out to God, certain that God would send down His mercy and rescue him. – Psalm 57:1-3

He found refuge “in the shadow of (God) wings”, knowing God was with him in the midst of this disaster (vs1). Although all the circumstances of his life seemed to indicate that God had forgotten him, David knew that God was still sovereign over all, and in the midst of men “whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords (vs 4)” his primary desire was for God to be exalted over all (vs 5 and 11).

How difficult it is, in the middle of a storm through all the deep emotions and uncertainty, to have a steadfast heart, singing and praising God (vs 7), yet this was exactly David’s response. He sang “I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the people. I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.” (vs 9 – 10)

Without knowing the outcome – whether he would live or die, David chose God’s glory!

Jesus showed that same steadfast heart. On the hardest day of His life, knowing He was about to walk a difficult road of suffering and death, He chose to trust God’s sovereignty. Praying to God, He knelt down and asked “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will by Your’s be done.” (Luke 22:42). God’s will required that Jesus lay down His life. However, God knew every detail, orchestrating all things, bringing forth a much bigger plan.

God had a plan that defeated death, not only for Jesus, but for every believer – “For an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life.” (John 5:28-29)

So, in difficult times, through the fog of uncertainty, God’s people can confidently trust Him; they can fix their eyes on Jesus and hold on tight, knowing victory is coming!”

Be blessed,
